details
RE/MAX Ecuador open data on 6 October 2026: the canton of Quito has 145 active listings of apartments for rent. Of these, 46 have three or more bedrooms and a stated price: from 250 to 2200 dollars a month, median 690, middle half from 458 to 1200. In the north-central districts of Iñaquito, Rumipamba (including Quito Tenis), Bellavista and Jipijapa (Monteserrín) there are 22 such listings, median 1200, range 470-2009; below 500, apartments are let in Carcelén, Calderón, Cotocollao, Cochapamba, Kennedy, Puengasí and La Vicentina. Two-bedroom apartments: 52 listings, median 533, middle half 373-750. The building fee (expensas) is usually listed separately, in these listings up to 500 dollars, from 20. The sample contains duplicates and one sale listing that wrongly ended up among rentals, so the figures are approximate. These are asking prices of one agency; the big portals (Plusvalía, Properati) are closed to automated reading, and we found no official rent statistics by district of Quito. For comparison: the official INEC basket for August 2026 allows 175 dollars a month for a family's rent in Quito - this is a basic basket, not the market.

The "food and drinks" group for Quito is 372.19 dollars a month: cereals 48.56, meat, chicken and fish 76.96, non-alcoholic drinks 91.01, dairy and eggs 38.41, fruit 18.17, vegetables 20.27, food away from home 47.61, pet food 13.37, and other items. The national average for the same group is 357.44. This is a basic basket built around a family living on wages; the real spending of an incoming family is usually higher. The CFBC basket was introduced in 2026 to replace the old CFB and is not comparable with earlier values.

INEC, bulletin on income poverty for December 2025: the poverty line is 92.40 dollars a month per person, extreme poverty 52.07. For a family of four this is 369.60 dollars - our multiplication. Urban poverty in the country in December 2025 was 13.8%. A second benchmark is the basic consumption basket for a family of four (CFBC) for August 2026: in Quito 846.47 dollars a month, nationally 828.06; it includes food 372.19, housing and utilities 282.04, of which rent 175.43, basic utilities (servicios básicos) 30.40, and communications 42.44. Neither the poverty line nor the basket reflects market rents: one three-bedroom apartment on listings costs 460-1200 dollars.

No national currency: since 9 January 2000 Ecuador has used the US dollar, so there is no exchange rate. Sending money abroad is taxed at 5% (ISD).
OfficialCentral Bank of Ecuador: the US dollar as legal tender since 2000 · 6 Oct 2026
details
Central Bank of Ecuador: on 9 January 2000 the country adopted the US dollar as legal tender in place of the sucre; the BCE stopped issuing a national currency and only mints its own fractional coins. So prices, wages and rents are in dollars, and there is no risk of a local currency devaluation. The currency outflow tax ISD, per the SRI tax service page: a 5% rate on transfers and payments abroad. Cash carried out of the country is exempt up to three SBU per adult, 1446 dollars in 2026, plus one SBU for each accompanying child. Card purchases and cash withdrawals abroad are exempt up to 5188.26 dollars a year (2025-2027), taxed above that. A non-resident foreigner who stayed no more than 90 days and declared the money brought in can take it out tax-free.
A foreigner with a visa can import household goods duty-free as menaje de casa. A car or motorcycle can be brought this way only by Ecuadorian citizens.
Officialgob.ec: importing household goods (menaje de casa) and work equipment · 6 Oct 2026
details
SENAE customs page on gob.ec: menaje de casa means furnishings and utensils for a family's daily life; it includes a car or motorcycle, but only for Ecuadorian citizens. Foreigners may clear menaje if they hold a visa. Such goods enter free of all foreign trade taxes (Art. 125 of the COPCI code and Art. 212 of its regulation). Required: an inspection request, a sworn declaration of the goods, an invoice or equivalent; a foreigner files through a customs agent, and the inspection takes place in their presence. No customs fee is charged, but transport, storage and the agent cost money. The same page has a condition of having lived abroad for more than two years - it is written for returning Ecuadorians, and the page does not say directly whether it applies to foreigners. We did not check the rules for foreigners importing cars outside menaje.
Electricity is 0.078-0.105 dollars per kWh by block plus 1.41 a month. 300 kWh comes to about 28 dollars before the street lighting and fire service charges.
OfficialRegistro Oficial No. 380, 9th supplement: resolution ARCONEL-009/2026, electricity tariffs for October-December 2026 · 6 Oct 2026
details
Tariff schedule ARCONEL-009/2026 for Empresa Eléctrica Quito, published in the Registro Oficial on 30 September 2026, in force for October-December 2026. Residential category, per kWh: 1-50 - 0.078 dollars; 51-100 - 0.081; 101-150 - 0.083; 151-200 - 0.097; 201-250 - 0.099; 251-300 - 0.101; 301-350 - 0.103; 351-500 - 0.105; 501-700 - 0.1285; 701-1000 - 0.145; and further up to 0.6812. The service charge (comercialización) is 1.414 dollars a month. The blocks are cumulative: each price applies only to its own kWh, as in El Diario's example for the same tariff. Our arithmetic, not an EEQ bill: 300 kWh = 26.95 + 1.41 = 28.36 dollars; 150 kWh = 12.10 + 1.41 = 13.51. According to El Diario, the EEQ bill also includes a street lighting charge and a contribution to the Quito fire service; we did not check their size. We did not find piped gas or the price of bottled gas.
As of 2024, a cubic metre of water in Quito cost 0.31 dollars for use up to 8 m³ and 0.40 at 16-30 m³. We could not open the utility's full tariff schedule.
SpecialistPrimicias: Quito municipality discusses a water tariff increase · 6 Oct 2026
details
Primicias, 19 November 2024, citing a city council debate: the lowest water price in Quito is 0.31 dollars per m³ for those using up to 8 m³ a month, while most people, using 16-30 m³, pay 0.40 per m³. The mayor then called water in the city "ridiculously cheap", and the council discussed a differentiated tariff rise by district. The EPMAPS water utility website (aguaquito.gob.ec) is closed by bot protection, so we did not see the full block schedule, the sewerage charge or the fixed part, and we do not calculate an example bill for 15 m³. The figures are almost two years old, and we did not check whether a rise was adopted after 2024.

OfficialUK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office: travel advice for Ecuador · 6 Oct 2026
details
According to the UK Foreign Office advice (updated 2 October 2026): Ecuador's public health system gives locals and foreigners the same care free of charge, but it is currently struggling - delays in getting appointments and limited access to medicines due to lack of funds, rising demand and staff shortages. Private treatment can be very expensive, and private hospitals require a credit card guarantee on admission. Standards of care and access to specialists drop sharply outside the big cities. The emergency number is 911, and there is an ECU 911 app. For temporary residence the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry requires health insurance for the whole visa period. We did not check private insurance prices.
Guagua Pichincha, 12 km to the west, covered Quito in ash in 1999-2000. Cotopaxi, 45 km away, could send mudflows into the Los Chillos valley.
OfficialIG-EPN: Guagua Pichincha volcano · 6 Oct 2026
details
IG-EPN, the Geophysical Institute of the National Polytechnic School. Guagua Pichincha stands 12 km west of Quito; its last eruptive phase was in 1999-2000, when ash columns paralysed the city for several days. The crater opens to the west, so pyroclastic flows and lava are, in IG-EPN's assessment, highly unlikely to reach Quito, but ash can. Cotopaxi is 45 km south-east of Quito; IG-EPN calls it one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world; its latest eruptions in 2015 and 2022-2023 were small. A large eruption like that of 1877 would melt the glacier and produce lahars, mudflows that could reach the Los Chillos valley in the south-east of the canton; more than 300 thousand people across the country live in lahar threat zones. According to IG-EPN, such an eruption would be preceded by clear signs days or weeks in advance. The UK Foreign Office also notes a high risk of earthquakes throughout the country.
