SpecialistStabroek News: City rents high and going higher, 18 June 2024 · 6 Oct 2026
details
Stabroek News, 18 June 2024: over five years rents in Georgetown have risen so much that even a habitable one-bedroom apartment for less than 80,000 Guyana dollars a month is hard to find. A realtor with ten years in the business told the newspaper that landlords target oil company staff, who get a housing allowance of, in most cases, more than 2500 US dollars (about 500,000 Guyana dollars) a month. There is no rent control body; some residents rent outside the city, but then commuting, fuel and traffic eat up the savings. The conversion of 80,000 to US dollars at the Bank of Guyana rate (about 208-210) is ours. This is a newspaper estimate from 2024, not listing statistics; prices have most likely risen in two years. We did not find listing platforms with open prices.
Prices in Georgetown rose 3.6% in the year to August 2026, food 4.4%. Since the end of 2018 the food price index has risen by about 70%.

Food: index 235.96, plus 4.4% over the year; housing plus 1.3%, transport and communication plus 4.1%, medical care plus 3.1%. The food index was 138.48 in December 2018; the rise to 235.96 is about 70%, our arithmetic. We did not find the cost of a food basket or a poverty line in Guyana dollars on the statistics site, so the questions about groceries and the family budget remain open.

How the central bank officially names the exchange rate regime is not stated on these pages. We did not check the rules for importing goods and cars.

details
Guyana Power and Light tariff structure, in force since 11 April 2021 by decision of the Public Utilities Commission, published on the GPL site as current on 6 October 2026. The former 15% fuel rebate is included in the rate. Residential tariff A: "Lifeline" (up to 75 kWh) 39.10 Guyana dollars per kWh and a fixed charge of 341.54 a month; above 75 kWh 43.43 per kWh and 351.04 a month. Example from the tariff (our arithmetic, not a GPL bill): 300 kWh × 43.43 + 351.04 = 13,380 Guyana dollars, about 64 US dollars at the Bank of Guyana rate of about 208-210. The page does not say whether any tax is added. The tariff is more than five years old, so confidence is low. We could not get the GWI water tariffs: the site gwi.gy did not open from our network. We did not check gas prices.
