The capital of Colombia at an altitude of 2,600 metres: around 14 degrees all year round and strong clinics, but safety depends heavily on the neighbourhood and its estrato (the official income-based class of a block).

On top of the rent there is almost always a cuota de administración, the building maintenance fee: where it is listed separately, the median is about 607k pesos in stratum 4 and about 1.1 million in stratum 6. On the first page almost all listings are promoted, so the sample is skewed upward. In dollars at a rate of about 3,300 pesos: 3.2 million is roughly $970, 5.8 million about $1,760.

SpecialistProBogotá: bulletin on monetary poverty, DANE data for 2024 · 29 Sep 2026
details
The DANE extreme poverty line is the cost of a minimum food basket per person. For Bogotá in 2024 it was 286,314 pesos a month per person, for the 13 largest cities 256,921, for the country 227,220. For a family of four in Bogotá this is 1,145,256 pesos; the multiplication by four is ours. This is the minimum of food at which a family is not considered extremely poor, not a real supermarket bill. The figures are taken from the ProBogotá bulletin of August 2025, which retells DANE; the DANE bulletin with 2025 data did not open for us, so the data is a year older than we would like.
The DANE poverty line for a family of four in Bogotá is 2.5 million pesos a month (2024). The digital nomad visa requires an income of at least 5.25 million pesos a month.

details
The DANE monetary poverty line for Bogotá in 2024 is 628,604 pesos a month per person, for the 13 cities 566,228, for the country 460,198. For a family of four in Bogotá this is 2,514,416 pesos, about $760; the multiplication is ours. In 2024, 19.6% of city residents lived below this line. This is a bare survival floor: it does not include private school, insurance and rent in strata 4–6: a single median two-bedroom in stratum 4, by listings, costs 3.25 million pesos. A more practical benchmark is the digital nomad visa requirement: an income of at least three minimum wages, which in 2026 is 3 × 1,750,905 = 5,252,715 pesos, about $1,590 a month; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs page has no extra allowance for family members. The DANE bulletin for 2025 did not open for us, so the poverty line is a year older.

A tax resident is someone who has spent more than 183 days in Colombia within any 365 consecutive days, including the days of arrival and departure.
OfficialDIAN: who is considered a tax resident of Colombia · 29 Sep 2026
details
DIAN, explanation of article 10 of the Tax Code. For tax purposes a resident is a person who was in the country continuously or intermittently for more than 183 calendar days, counting the days of arrival and departure, within any period of 365 consecutive days. If these days fall into two calendar years, the person is considered a resident from the second year. For citizens of Colombia there are separate criteria: half of income, property or assets in the country. Non-residents file a return on form 110. Our conclusion from two sources: the visa-free 180 days are counted by the Ministry per calendar year, while the tax threshold is counted over any 365 consecutive days, so someone who spends the end of one year and the beginning of the next in Colombia can become a tax resident without breaking any migration rules.

The statistics agency DANE, from the GEIH survey, data prepared for the 2026 minimum wage negotiations: for January–October 2025, employees earned an average of 2,158,174 pesos a month and the self-employed 1,384,199. In the 13 largest cities with their suburbs (Bogotá, Medellín, Cali and others) the figures are 2,575,541 and 1,911,991. Male employees: 2,209,324; female employees: 2,093,408. Caveats: this is cash income from the main job, an average, not a median, and it is for 2025: there is no more recent average in open sources. The distribution is more telling than the average: 48.9% of employed people in 2025 earned less than that year's minimum wage (1,423,500 pesos), and another 10.3% exactly the minimum wage. The minimum wage for 2026 is 1,750,905 pesos a month: it was set provisionally by Decreto 0159 of 19 February 2026, until the Council of State rules on case 0004-2026, so the amount may change. In dollars at the end-of-September 2026 rate (3,300.87): employees about 654, the self-employed about 419, the minimum wage about 530.

EAAB tariffs since July 2026 (Acuerdo 255). Water, stratum 4: fixed charge 9,135.88 pesos a month, 3,231.15 per cubic meter; sewerage, stratum 4: 6,908.09 a month and 5,071.26 per cubic meter. Stratum 3: water 7,765.50 and 2,746.48 per m³, sewerage 5,871.88 and 4,310.57. Stratum 6: water 25,032.31 and 5,331.40 per m³, sewerage 23,901.99 and 8,164.73. Stratum 1: water 2,740.76 and 969.35, sewerage 2,072.43 and 1,521.38. The subsidized volume is up to 22 m³ per two months; above it, strata 1–4 pay the full stratum 4 price. Our calculation for 11 m³ a month: stratum 1 - about 32k pesos, stratum 3 - 91k, stratum 4 - 107k, stratum 6 - 197k. This is tariff arithmetic, not a bill; garbage collection, electricity and gas are not included. Enel electricity is in a separate fact; there is no full utilities total here.
Enel electricity, September 2026: in stratum 4 - 875 pesos per kWh, in strata 5 and 6 - 1,050. For 300 kWh, stratum 4 comes to about 263k pesos ($79), stratum 6 about 315k.

Enel Colombia tariff schedule for September 2026, residential sector, low voltage, Enel equipment. Stratum 4: 875.05 pesos per kWh for the entire volume. Strata 5 and 6: 1,050.06 (the same 875.05 plus a 20% surcharge). Strata 1–3 pay the subsidized rate only for the first 130 kWh a month (the threshold for cities above 1,000 m above sea level; Bogotá is at about 2,600): stratum 1 - 409.72, stratum 2 - 512.15, stratum 3 - 743.79; everything above 130 kWh costs the full rate of 875.05. There is no fixed component: according to the tariff schedule it is zero. Example for 300 kWh a month (tariff arithmetic, not anyone’s real bill): stratum 1 about 202k pesos, stratum 2 about 215k, stratum 3 about 245k, stratum 4 about 263k ($79), strata 5 and 6 about 315k ($95). The sum does not include street lighting and other municipal lines of the bill. For comparison, Medellín: EPM charges about 288k pesos in stratum 4 for the same 300 kWh. News reports from September 2026 say the government wants to revise the subsidies by stratum (we did not open the articles themselves), so the benefits for strata 1–3 may change.

OfficialColombia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs: whether a visa is needed, visa-exempt country lists A, B and C · 29 Sep 2026
details
Page of the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs “Do I need a visa” (Resolución 5488 de 2022 and 3717 de 2023). List A, where passports are exempt from a visa for short stays, includes Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Moldova. The page does not name Belarus, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan at all; Uzbekistan and Tajikistan appear only in the list of countries with a transit visa. So they are not on the visa-free lists, and under the general rule a visitor visa is needed; check the conditions for your passport with a Colombian consulate. Citizens of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan need a visa even for a layover at a Colombian airport. During a visa-free stay you may not receive payment from Colombian employers. For remote workers with a visa-free passport the Ministry says directly: you can enter without a visa with the permission of the migration service and stay up to 90 days, extendable to a maximum of 180 days per calendar year, if there is no payment from Colombian companies.
Visa V for up to 2 years: income of at least 3 minimum wages (5.25 million pesos, about $1,590) over 3 months and health insurance. Only for visa-exempt passports.

details
Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, visitor visa V, category Nómada Digital: for remote work from Colombia exclusively for foreign companies, as an employee or freelancer, or for launching a digital startup. Requirements: a passport of a country exempt from a visa for short stays, a letter from the foreign company about the nature of the work and pay (or a contract, or proof of co-ownership of the company), bank statements showing income of at least three minimum wages for the last 3 months, a health insurance policy for the whole stay covering illness, pregnancy, hospitalization and repatriation. The 2026 minimum wage is 1,750,905 pesos (decree 0159 of 19 February 2026), so the threshold is 5,252,715 pesos a month. The term is up to two years; family members can be registered as beneficiaries. Working for Colombian companies is not allowed. Important for residency plans: in the Ministry’s table, time on visa V does not count toward the period for the permanent visa R; only M visas count.
Permanent visa R - after 5 years on a migrant visa M (3 years for spouses of Colombians). Routes to M: work, pension, an apartment from 612.8 million pesos.

Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Resolución 5477 de 2022. The migrant visa M is issued for up to three years to those who plan to settle; it lapses if you leave for more than 180 consecutive days. The permanent visa R by accumulated time: 5 years on M Trabajador, Socio, Profesional Independiente, Pensionado, Inversionista and other visas; 3 years for the spouse of a Colombian; 2 years for parents of a Colombian, citizens of Mercosur and the Andean Community. Continuity counts only if the new visa is issued before the old one expires; a temporary salvoconducto pass does not close the gap. M Pensionado - a pension of at least three minimum wages; you may not work and may not join the public health insurance. M Inversionista - an apartment in your own name worth at least 350 minimum wages (612,816,750 pesos in 2026) or direct investment of more than 650 wages. Visa R gives an open right to work, is renewed every 5 years, and is lost if you spend two years in a row outside the country. Even when the required period has been completed, visa R, according to the Ministry, is not issued automatically.
You need visa R and five years of continuous residence in the country, two years for spouses of Colombians and parents of Colombian children. Plus an exam on the constitution and Spanish.

details
Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, naturalization under Ley 2332 de 2023. You must be a holder or beneficiary of visa R and have lived in Colombia continuously for five years before applying. The period is shortened to two years for spouses and permanent partners of Colombians, for parents of Colombian children and for citizens of Spain. Leaving the country for a year or more interrupts the period. The exam on the constitution, history, culture and geography and on Spanish (if it is not your native language) can be taken up to two times; those who graduated from a school or university in Colombia are exempt from it. Minor children with a visa R as beneficiaries can be included in a parent’s application. All migration documents must be valid until the end of the procedure; Migración Colombia may check the address. The page does not specify whether years on an M visa count toward these five years or whether the count starts from the issue of visa R. In the second case the path for a family without Colombian relatives takes about 10 years: 5 years on an M visa before visa R and another 5 years with it.

OfficialBogotá City Hall: how to enroll in a public school for 2027 · 29 Sep 2026
details
Bogotá Secretariat of Education, 20 August 2026: enrollment in state schools runs in two phases, online, free and without intermediaries. The first phase, for priority groups, runs from 10 August to 11 September 2026, with results from 30 September. The second phase, for everyone else, runs from 5 October to 23 December 2026; families choose a place themselves on the Secretariat’s website, and formalization at the school starts on 13 October. Children aged 3–5 can enroll in prejardín, jardín and transición at any time of the year. A foreign student needs a document (a visa or cédula de extranjería, the Colombian foreigner ID card), the parents’ documents, a 3x4 photo, a health insurance certificate if there is one (if not, the child will be accepted for emergency care in the public network), and a report card for the previous grade with an apostille; if there is no report card, the school carries out a free knowledge assessment and determines the grade. If the child has no Colombian document, they are registered under a number assigned by the Secretariat. This list of documents was published in 2023 for children from Venezuela. Private school prices are in a separate fact.
Expensive private schools in Bogotá charge about 3–4.1 million pesos a month ($900–1,240). We did not find prices for mid-level schools.
SpecialistInfobae: tuition at Gimnasio Campestre and Colegio Marymount, February 2026 · 29 Sep 2026
details
This is an estimate of the top segment, not an average price for the city: schools do not publish their price lists openly, the figures are taken from the press and comparison sites. Gimnasio Campestre: monthly fee about 3 million pesos, per Infobae of 4 February 2026 (citing industry sources). Colegio Marymount (International Baccalaureate, enhanced English): fee about 4.1 million pesos a month, enrollment fee (matrícula) above 4.4 million, per the Buscando Colegio platform as retold by Infobae. Gimnasio Colombo Británico, Portafolio of 21 January 2026: per Buscando Colegio, matrícula 3,801,000 pesos and a fee of 3,525,000 a month; per the Los Mejores Colegios portal the fee is 3.0–3.5 million; the school itself told journalists an “average value” of about 4.5 million without specifying whether this is a monthly fee (the portals give 3.0–3.5 million), and did not give exact amounts without a grade level, so we do not take the 4.5 million figure into the range. On top of that, Colombo Británico charges about 403k for meals in the school cafeteria and up to 641k pesos a month for the bus. The range of 3–4.1 million: the low end is Campestre (about 3 million), the high end is Marymount (about 4.1 million), and the Colombo Británico fee (3.0–3.5 million) lies inside it; in dollars at a rate of about 3,300 pesos this is 900–1,240. In Colombia there are two payments: matrícula, a one-time fee at the start of the school year, and pensión, the monthly fee; therefore the enrollment amounts are shown separately and are not included in the range. Mid-level and low-end schools cost noticeably less, but we did not find a reliable publication with their prices, so the bottom of the range does not show the price of an inexpensive private school. The rules for enrollment in free city schools are in a separate fact about schools and kindergartens.

ProBogotá annual report based on SIEDCO police data, extracted on 15 January 2026. In 2025 there were 1,173 murders in Bogotá against 1,214 in 2024 (down 3.4%, the mayor’s office gives the same figure), a rate of 14.8 per 100k; for Colombia, per the same report, 25.8. The most murders per 100k are in Santa Fe, Los Mártires and Ciudad Bolívar, the fewest in Engativá; we do not give exact rates for these districts because for Santa Fe the report gives the figure 62 sometimes as a rate and sometimes as a number of cases. Street thefts: 123,393 cases, 1,554 per 100k, highest in La Candelaria (8,160), Los Mártires (5,412) and Chapinero (4,892), lowest in Usme (517). Thefts from homes: 5,977 cases, 75.3 per 100k, highest in Chapinero (172.9), Teusaquillo (170.1) and Barrios Unidos (127.3). The report itself notes that central districts with a large flow of visitors get an inflated rate per resident, and for 17.8% of street thefts the district is not specified. Takeaway for a family: murders are rare in the northern districts, but phone thefts and burglaries there are a real risk.

The stratum (estrato) is an official category of an address from 1 to 6; it appears in a listing next to the floor area. It determines both housing prices and utility rates. Based on 97 unique Fincaraíz listings for two-bedroom apartments in Chapinero, Usaquén, Chicó Norte, Teusaquillo and Cedritos on 29 September 2026, the median rent is: stratum 3 - 2,200,000 pesos (7 listings, 43 m²), stratum 4 - 3,250,000 (42 listings, 67 m²), stratum 5 - 4,415,000 (16, 77.5 m²), stratum 6 - 6,000,000 (31, 99 m²). Tariffs work the same way: in the EAAB table stratum 4 pays exactly what government institutions pay, strata 1–3 pay less, strata 5 and 6 pay more; the subsidy and surcharge coefficients were approved by Acuerdo Distrital 830 of 2021. The fixed water charge since July 2026: stratum 1 - 2,741 pesos a month, stratum 3 - 7,766, stratum 4 - 9,136, stratum 6 - 25,032. The Chicó Norte results contain only strata 5 and 6, so the highest tariffs apply there. The stratum describes the area but does not guarantee safety: for burglaries from homes, Chapinero and Teusaquillo are at the top, see the safety fact.
